Carla Sunberg, a general superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene since 2017, was ordained on the Russia North District where she and her husband, Chuck, served the Church of the Nazarene for 13 years as pioneer missionaries to the former Soviet Union. After returning to the United States in 2005, the Sunbergs pastored Grace Point Church of the Nazarene in Fort Wayne, Indiana before their election as co-district superintendents of the East Ohio District Church of the Nazarene in 2011. They relocated to Kansas City following Carla’s election as president of Nazarene Theological Seminary in 2014. Carla has a Bachelor of Science in nursing from MidAmerica Nazarene University, a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Nazarene Theological Seminary, a PhD in historical theology from Nazarene Theological College and The University of Manchester, United Kingdom, and an honorary doctorate from Olivet Nazarene University. She co-authored Faxes from Russia, Reclaiming Eve: The Identity and Calling of Women in the Kingdom of God, and Reflecting the Image: Our Call to Mirror Christ in the World. She is the author of The Cappadocian Mothers: Deification Exemplified in the Writings of Basil, Gregory and Gregory and of numerous articles for various church publications. Born in Germany where her parents were serving as missionaries, Carla’s extensive experience internationally has included serving as adjunct faculty for a number of institutions. She loves to teach and train leaders of the future of the church, and her heartfelt passion is a life of holiness and service for the Lord. Carla and Chuck are proud parents of two adult daughters: Christa, who lives in England with her husband, Iain Maciver, and their son, Theo; and Cara, who lives in Kansas with her husband, Justin Shonamon, and their daughters, Mackenzie and Alice.
Sam Vassel served as senior pastor of Bronx Bethany Church of the Nazarene, Bronx, New York, for 18 years before assuming his present responsibilities in 2018 as district superintendent of the Metro New York District of the Church of the Nazarene. He came to the Bronx from his native Jamaica where he was senior pastor of Bethune Avenue Holiness Christian Church for ten years and bishop of the Holiness Christian Church in Jamaica for two years before answering the call to the Bronx in 2000. Sam has worked extensively in student ministries in Jamaica as a Staff Worker in the Students Christian Fellowship & Scripture Union (SCF/SU), the member movement of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES) which incorporates the Inter Schools/Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship (IS/IVCF) and the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) in that country. He has also been a lecturer at Jamaica Theological Seminary as well as Alliance Theological Seminary in New York. He has been a contributing writer for Preacher’s Magazine and serves on various boards within the Church of the Nazarene and the wider Christian and civic communities. Sam holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica, a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Wheaton College Graduate School, and a DMin from Columbia Theological Seminary. He has been married to Angela for 39 years and together they have two adult children, David and Kara-Beth, who are married to Deidre and Greg respectively. They are the doting grandparents of Karis, Pax, Che, Gabriella and Dhiya.
Rick Harvey is pastor of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, Bethany, Oklahoma. He served previously as youth pastor at Kansas City First and as pastor of Nazarene congregations in Tennessee (Dale and Columbia Grace) and Ohio (Springdale). He is a graduate of Trevecca Nazarene University, Nazarene Theological Seminary (MDiv), and Asbury Seminary (DMin). Rick and his wife, Annette, have two daughters, Brittany and Morgan, and one granddaughter, Sadie.
Albert & Christine Hung
Albert & Christine Hung serve on the Northern California District Church of the Nazarene — Albert as district superintendent and Christine as director of pastoral development. In 2003, after several years in entertainment as a stage director, recording artist, and television host, Albert responded to a call from the Lord to pastoral ministry. He speaks frequently on the topics of preaching, cross-cultural ministry, leadership development, and the future of the church. Christine has a love for studying Scripture and has been recognized for her innovative approach to helping others interact with God’s Word. Prior to his election as district superintendent, Albert was lead pastor of Trinity Church of the Nazarene, a multi-site, multi-congregational church serving English, Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino communities east of Los Angeles. Until recently, Christine served as pastor of the Rowland Heights campus of Trinity. Albert and Christine have four children: Elijah, Micaela, Genevieve, and Nathaniel.
Steve Estep is lead pastor at Marion First (since June, 2017) and chaplain to the Marion Police Department. He previously served churches in Clarksville, Tennessee and Harrisonville, Missouri. Originally from West Virginia, Steve is a graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Nazarene Theological Seminary (MDiv), and McCormick Theological Seminary (D.Min in Preaching). He has served as adjunct professor of preaching at NTS where he is also president of the alumni association and a member of the Board of Trustees. His first book, The Call to Preach: The Art of Sermon Preparation (The Foundry Publishing) was released in 2019. He and his wife Michelle live in Marion, Ohio and have three grown children: Brandon (Whitney), Brooke, and Blake (Kelsey). Steve enjoys being "Poppy" to Sawyer, is a big fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and looks for opportunities to hunt, fish, jet-ski, and ride his motorcycle.
